Native Americans faced a dilemma deciding who to support in what must have been a bewildering civil war. The Native American tribes or confederations were themselves divided over whether to join a war or keep the peace. As with most complicated conflicts, old alliances, promises and bribes - and some revenge - all played their part in deciding which faction to support.
The majority of the Native American tribes sided with the British forces, which they also paid and supplied to harass American soldiers and, more controversially, their farms. This caused the war to take on a darker tone as the Americans fought back and raided Indian settlements. Armed with muskets and tomahawks, and adept at field technique, Indian belligerents brought terror to the men trapped in the woods, but they could be dismayed by defeat and leave no place in the main battle line.
