Description

Witnessing a massive air force at the Battle of Taranto, the Japanese quickly mastered the tactic, as seen in their infamous attack on Pearl Harbor. Later in the war, after suffering terrible attrition and facing defeat, the Japanese desperately turned to kamikaze attacks.

Kawanishi N1K1 George: The N1K1, known to the Allies as "George", entered service in 1943. Conceived as a land-based derivative of the single-seat kyofu fighter, the George so impressed the Imperial Japanese Navy that they adopted it. Armed with two .303 machine guns and four 20mm cannons, the George outperformed the Hellcat and was able to compete with aircraft like the Mustang and Corsair.

Nakajima B5N Kate: The standard Japanese torpedo bomber and a major cause of damage at Pearl Harbor, the Kate was a robust and reliable aircraft that far outperformed its American counterparts.

Mitsubishi G3M Nell: Designed to meet the needs of a maritime reconnaissance and attack platform, the G3M Nell was able to fulfill the role of a tactical bomber or torpedo attack and did so with distinction, despite being characterized by the outbreak of war as a was considered obsolete. G3Ms took part in attacks on HMS Repulse and Prince of Wales in December 1941, the first sinking of capital ships at the hands of aircraft.
