Description

Submarines: The Gato-class submarine class was the first mass-produced U.S. submarine class of World War II and formed the bulk of the United States Navy submarine fleet of the war. It was the Gato class and successors to their design that were largely responsible for disrupting the Japanese merchant fleet. Individual ships in the Gato class were given names of sea creatures, with the leadership of their class being named after a species of small catsharks.

MTBs: The Elco was equipped with four torpedo tubes, which combined with its speed made it a serious threat to larger ships. The Elco is the largest PT boat deployed by the US Navy and is also notable for future President Kennedy commanding one. The crews of these boats relied on their smaller size, speed, and maneuverability—and darkness—to survive.
