Proud, resentful, arrogant; all of these words could be used to describe Kaneda Griss, the notorious leader of The Firm’s ''River Crew''. But in the grand scheme of things, Kaneda is merely an underling. As the disappointing son of a powerful Underboss, he was sent to Skyton to keep him out of the way.
Kaneda's father did take pride in one aspect of his son’s personality: his toughness. In every other respect, Kaneda was a disappointment. His father had hoped to train him as a successor, but it was clear early on that Kaneda's intelligence only amounted to a kind of low cunning.
While his father was a master of control through selectively applied violence, Kaneda was nothing more than an angry thug. Where the Underboss was a subtle tactician, carefully calculating how to improve his position and leverage opportunities, Kaneda was impulsive and greedy. Worst of all, in his father’s eyes, Kaneda lacked the ambition or vision to step outside his father’s shadow and create his own legacy. Instead, he lazed around, started fights, and engaged in petty thievery and murder over trivial matters.
As a result, Kaneda was relegated to the River Crew—a gang of misfits and psychopaths who, while useful, had to be kept at arm's length. Kaneda recognized this slight all too well and often took out his frustrations on his people. Despite his faults as a leader, Kaneda is a cunning fighter, well-suited to command a group as wild and dangerous as the River Crew.
