Buy terrain and bases online – at Kutami
For almost all tabletop wargaming miniatures, whether Games Workshop (Warhammer 40k and AoS), Infinity or Black Powder, you need a base. These are often already included with the minis - but maybe you want to customize your army?
In our online shop you will find a large selection of transparent, plain and already pre-designed bases - and of course also the basing materials and terrain bits and pieces required for your base design (or diorama)!
Large, impressive terrain pieces for your gaming table let you set up an entire scenario in no time at all, while high-quality, themed playmats provide the finishing touch to your tabletop game.
Why base design?
A designed base gives your mini the finishing touch! For many hobbyists, this is the crowning glory and a continuous base design puts your army in the limelight. Armies that consist of models with different designs are also visually harmonized in this way.
Besides painting the characters, this is another way to express your army's theme and environment.
If you want to compete in tabletop tournaments, a (simple) base design is good form. In addition, your miniatures should have at least three colors - e.g. red armor, gold metal parts, orange cloth.
How does base design work?
A simple but effective base design can be achieved with handicraft (PVA or wood) glue and hobby sand as well as hobby grass tufts.
This classic method is very popular and there are now many materials available, ranging from coarse cork chips to quick-drying glue and fixers, as well as tufts of grass and lasercut plants in all sorts of shapes and colors that can turn your base into a real highlight with simple methods.
A quick guide to the classic method:
Your mini can be already painted or unprimed. Some prefer to stick the minis on the base first, others stick/pin the minis on after the design.
- Apply craft glue (PVA glue / wood glue) to the areas of the base that are to be sanded - this works well with an old brush or e.g. the Citadel Medium Texture Spreader.
- You can make corrections with a dampened brush (e.g. if glue has gotten on your miniature).
- If you keep your hobby sand in a small can or similar, you can put your base (possibly on top of it if you don't have a mini) in the can and then carefully move it back and forth.
- Alternatively sprinkle the sand on the base (place a cutting mat or newspaper underneath).
- When all the glued areas are covered with sand and you like the result, gently tap off the base (but don't touch the fresh glued areas) and set it aside to dry.
- As soon as your sanded base is dry, the further procedure depends on whether your mini is already painted and whether it is glued to the base:
- You can prime Mini and Sanded Base with Spray Primer and then paint everything as usual
- Or you prime your base with normal brush colors or primer
- Further steps are: ink - dry brushing - glue on tufts and plants!
How can I achieve this even faster? :)
For those of you in a hurry, there are already predesigned bases in all kinds of styles - e.g. from Games Workshop, Puppet Wars and Micro Art Studios. These can simply be used instead of the miniature's included base and are available in many sizes. These bases are unpainted and can therefore be further designed, painted and decorated by you as you wish.
For each design series there is also a corresponding basing kit with terrain pieces that you can use in dioramas and for larger bases.
No time at all for base design? Gamer's Grass bases are not only available in the variant described above, but are already pre-painted and provided with matching tufts of grass. Simply attach your ready-painted miniatures to the bases and your army will shine in all its glory right away!
