Black Knights
The ground rumbles and trembles under the onslaught of the Black Knights. These undead cavaliers make up the shock regiments of the Deathrattle Kingdoms; mounted on indefatigable skeletal steeds, they crash upon the enemy with the ultimate inevitability of death itself. The sheer momentum and bone-splintering force of their impact shatter shield walls in seconds, while long heirloom lances impale flesh and pierce steel plates. Those foes who attempt to flee are swiftly ridden down by the Black Knights, who perform such cull duties with the same cold satisfaction that a Pied Piper would exterminate a nest of scurrying vermin.
Black Knights were once landed nobles and feudal descendants, for in those ancient kingdoms only they possessed the wealth to maintain a suitable war-steed. They had the honor of riding at the head of their liege's armies, and many Wight Kings still grant their Black Knights the right to launch the first charge into battle - a privilege often irritating among allied bands of Blood Knights. Black Knights often maintain an abiding sense of pride in their status and refuse to lower their lances to anyone who has not yet earned their respect through Conquest. In truth, however, the Black Knights, like most Deathrattles, are bound by a single, eternal duty, and the satisfaction they find in the fury of onslaught is forever fleeting.
When called into battle, Black Knights often formed into squadrons of powerful shock cavalry. During their mortal lives, these unearthly knights wielded weapons with enchantments of destruction. Though tainted by the patina of centuries, these battle Tools are no less powerful than they were when the wielder was a man of flesh and blood. It is said that once someone is pierced by a Black Knight's lance or sword, the wound it inflicts would never heal. In addition to enchanted weapons, the Black Knight's steeds are said to be caught between worlds due to the ritual that binds the steed to its master. There have been reports of Black Knights galloping right through the rubble of destroyed cities, or even charging across the surface of a lake without leaving a single wave in their wake. With these advantages at their disposal, these lifeless cavaliers would then charge headlong into the ranks of their still-living foes, spitting their foes onto lances cloaked in cold flames and striking with heavy swords older than the Empire itself.
