A ward is a member of a noble clan who has been taken in by another clan to raise for a period of time. The practice varies, sometimes being undertaken voluntarily - to help potential heirs learn the customs of other clans as part of their training. It can also be involuntary, with the "ward" actually being a "hostage" for the good behavior of his or her clan or until a ransom is paid. Sometimes in marital unions, one of the fiancés is taken as a ward so that he or she can meet their future spouse.
