Primaris Lieutenant with Power Sword

Lieutenant was a rank of Space Marine assigned to the Legiones Astartes during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy. After the introduction of the Codex Astartes, it fell into disuse for some time for many years.

Ten thousand years after the Heresy, the return of Roboute Guilliman reintroduced the rank of lieutenant. Lieutenants now serve under the command of Captains and act as their right hands, providing flexibility and helping guide their battle-brothers into combat. Space Marine Companies are usually divided into two semi-companies, each commanded by a lieutenant.

Some chapters assign additional roles to lieutenants; For example, in the Salamanders they have a ceremonial duty as their captain's bodyguard, while in the Iron Hands they are tasked with challenging their captain's plans to look for human error.
