The story of the Odani Travellers begins with their connection to the Fates, omniscient beings who control the threads of destiny. For the Odani people, servants of the Fates, the gift of foresight is passed down through the female line from mother to daughter. This ability to foresee what is to come has kept the Travellers healthy, wealthy, and wise, and has allowed them to stay one step ahead of any authorities that seek to limit their nomadic lifestyle.

The Odani move from town to town across America, never staying long in any location. When they arrive, the extended Odani families set up stalls, offering shows and attractions that entice locals to part with their money for entertainment. The highlight is the dazzling performances beneath their colorful canvas tent. While the Odani welcome visitors with a charming smile, their knowledge of the Fates and their skill in misdirection allow them to survive in the Shadow War, where they believe humanity will face its ruin.

However, it is often whispered that locals disappear shortly after the Odani leave town, vanishing without a trace. These victims, often from the fringes of society, would have contributed to great calamities in the Odani’s future, but the Travellers, with their foresight, see them for what they are and act accordingly. Yet for every fate averted, new omens seem to appear, as if the Odani cannot escape the will of the Fates entirely.

One of the most respected families among the Odani is the Calderas family. Max Calderas, the patriarch, commands respect from his children and the other Odani families. Known as "Pop" to his kin, Max has the appearance of an aging strongman but remains a charismatic and formidable figure, especially when his family or the will of the Fates is at risk.

Talia, Max’s wife, has a youthful appearance that often leads to her being mistaken for one of his children. She is gifted with the ability to command spirits and foresee the future, but her fortune-telling abilities are often dismissed by the public as mere tricks. In reality, Talia serves the Fates, with many spirits under her control. Pali, a mischievous imp, devours any incriminating evidence with delight, while Amran, a tall, gaunt figure with Black teeth and slashing claws, strikes fear into those who cross its path.

The Calderas children are as varied as the Fates themselves. Caleb, monstrous and strong, and Nyssa, bewitching and cunning, serve the family’s interests. Stefan, the eldest and most like his father, has been marked as the future leader of the Odani. Known as a strongman with a shaved scalp and handlebar mustache, Stefan is a formidable opponent but often uses his size to distract enemies while his youngest sister, Vida, slips in quietly to handle matters more discreetly.
