Mortek crawler catapult
The arcane catapult known as the Mortek Crawler brings death from afar with terrifying accuracy. Crewed by four ossiarchs crafted by master artillerymen, it can unleash a hail of necrotic skulls that bite and gnaw, send soul-rending spirits into the enemy, or hurl heavy blocks infused with curses that can kill the powerful in the blink of an eye.
The Mortek Crawler is a creation of mad genius. Created by Katakros himself, it's an extremely efficient design for being both a creature and a machine - the original diagrams still hold pride of place on the scroll-covered walls of Mortarch's Chamber of Contemplation to this day. Far more than a simple catapult, the Mortek Crawler is a self-propelled artillery piece that has its own aggressive animus; It can reload and fire its arcane charge in seconds. It is carried to war on dozens of skeletal legs that curl like those of a centipede as it slowly carries its mass to war between the legions of Ossiarchs. Unlike traditional artillery, it can fire on the move without sacrificing accuracy, making it the perfect tool to support a cohort on the long march of perpetual Conquest.
The winch-like contraption on the Crawler's side is powered by a spinning wheel of bone that houses a member of the Mornial caste—those ossiarchs who lack the skills of a warrior but have the stamina to carry on the same task forever without break to work. The War Viziers, leaning from its vertical supports, act as observers. These agents are well adept at identifying armies' vulnerabilities and the command structures that make tempting targets in their ranks. It is they who decide which of the Crawler's esoteric ammo types the crew at the rear of the machine will load into each Claw, and they command the torsion to be released, sending the missiles hurtling through the air to smash them into the enemy.
The Mortek Crawler has three main types of ammo, each optimized to inflict a different type of destruction on the enemy. The hollow artifact known as the Cauldron of Agony contains those spirits too tormented by war and death to imbue a Bonereaper construct with animus. Driven far beyond their reasonable limits, they scream in excruciating agony as the cauldron slams into the greater mass of the enemy, driving the survivors insane with fear.
Known as the Cursed Stele, the artifact is engraved with a death hex that grows stronger as the Mortek Crawler is attacked. This engraved block not only lands with bone-crushing force, but also discharges this deadly curse on impact. When imbued well enough with the energies of Vengeance, anything hit by the stele will erupt in baleful flames, turning to charred bonedust in seconds.
The third type of ammunition takes the form of a cluster of necrotic skulls. Left in the labs of Nagashizzar to absorb the unholy energies of the Shyish Nadir, each one so reeks of morbid magic that they are surrounded by an aura of blackest aether smoke. Those struck by such missiles are exposed to the full extent of these deadly energies, falling to the ground in a jolt of fear and agony that distorts their features while their life force suffers immeasurable damage.
