The Medium Tank M3, an American tank that saw service with British, US, and Soviet forces during World War II, bore distinctive nicknames bestowed by British troops to circumvent the confusion created by the US military's coding system. The original M3 was christened the "Lee," while the British turret variant earned the name "Grant." Both monikers paid homage to American Civil War generals.

The British Grants played a crucial role in the North African Campaign against Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's forces. Their sudden appearance took the Germans by surprise, as they were unprepared for the formidable Grant with its 75mm gun. In terms of armor and firepower, the Grant proved equal to or superior to most of the threats it encountered on the battlefield. At the time, long-range, high-velocity guns were not yet commonplace among German tanks in 1942.

Throughout the North African Campaign, the Grants continued to serve until its conclusion, earning a reputation for their mechanical reliability, robust armor protection, and formidable firepower. This variant, complete with trackguards, offered the tank additional protection during battles across various theaters of operation. The Grants played a pivotal role in the conflict, exemplifying their versatility and combat effectiveness in the challenging desert terrain of North Africa.
