The foremost cavalry of Nagash's new order, the Kavaloi are renowned across Shyish for their relentless charge and mastery of horsemanship on the battlefield. A regiment of such horsemen can collapse a flank of an enemy army, driving the wedge of their charge deep into the enemy's heart before retreating to attack again.

Far ahead, the haze of heat shimmers on the horizon, dissolving into what appears to be cavalry riding hard. Banners flap in the dry desert winds. Faint sunlight glistens on ornate helms and heavy shields. The sound of nadirite-shod hooves haunts the threshold of hearing, a rolling thunder soon to break loose. It's only as they draw closer and closer that the true meaning of the situation becomes clear - these are no ordinary horsemen, but undead terrors made of twisted bones. These are the shock cavalry of Nagashizzar, sent to crush the enemies of the Ossiarch Empire, their duty to destroy, hack and trample until nothing remains of the enemy but dismembered corpses

It is rare for the Kavalos Deathriders to be sighted in peacetime; When a mortal sees them, their death warrant is usually already signed. They are a popular means of punishing those who would rebel against the supremacy of the ossiarchs, especially when the transgressors would flee rather than fight. Though their prey may have a dramatic head start in the face of the ossiarch's slow but sure cycle of tithing, they cannot run forever—not when pursued by the focused and tireless Kavaloi horsemen. Eventually, the living must eat, drink, regroup, and sleep, while there is no such obstacle for the Deathriders. Eventually they will find their prey, that is as certain as death itself. To say throughout the Shyish Innerlands that one "runs from the Deathrider" is to admit that one pursues a quest doomed to inevitable failure

Wielding specially crafted carrion birds that bestowed part of the witch's gaze on their Mortisan makers, the Kavaloi track the soul tracks of their foes at a steady gallop, traversing open plains and steaming deltas with equal ease. Night after night they ride silently through the darkness; they pass day after day under the blazing sun without complaining or pausing.

They gallop only when their intended victims are in sight, lowering the tips of their nadirite weapons in preparation for the carnage to come.

The Creatures that the Death Riders carry across the Mortal Realms are far more than beasts of burden; They are weapons of war in their own right. Just as an Ossiarch Bonereaper is a composite creation made up of many souls and skeletons fused into a horrifying new form, the Kavalos Steed is a Monster of bones possessed by multiple mixed spirits. These are mainly animalistic. The souls of loyal stallions, tireless draft horses, ill-tempered rhinos, and Ossian Creatures like desolate crocodiles and the ferocious flightless birds known as dyatri have all fused to give the Kavalos steed the right blend of ferocity and determination. The Kavalos Deathriders can be armed with Nadirite Swords or Nadirite Spears - deadly weapons capable of stealing an opponent's life force. The kit also includes the option to build a Mortek Hekatos and a Necrophoros Standard Bearer to lead the devastating attack.
