Italy, wanting to secure its place among the powers of Europe, began colonizing a number of African countries, including Eritrea, in the late 19th century.

Eritrean Ascari battalions became an integral part of Italian East African colonization and were supplied with Italian arms and Equipment. Ascari served with distinction in World War II and were vital in the North African campaign. They were respected and fierce combatants who served until the fall of Italian East Africa in 1941.
