"Awake now, O Terrible Knight! Lend me your strength and fortitude of soul, and I will reward you with righteous purpose."
- from Rites of Awakening
The Nemesis Dreadknight is a humanoid combat runner used by the Order of Grey Knights Space Marines for the express purpose of fighting the Great Demons of Chaos. A marvel of Imperial technology, these adamantium-alloyed exoskeletons are covered in composite ceramic plates and armoured control links, allowing a single Grey Knight to stand on equal footing with the infernal children of the Dark Gods while enhancing his natural psychic abilities .
In many ways, Dreadknights are a more powerful and advanced version of the standard Space Marine dreadnought. However, Dreadknights are not true cybernetic combat runners, but advanced exoskeletons designed to be used by any Astartes trained in their use to increase their physical strength and firepower even beyond the superhuman norm of Space Marines. These war machines are currently exclusive to the Grey Knights.
Dreadknight exoskeletons were designed and built to allow a single Grey Knights Astartes to fight powerful Great Demons and Demon Princes who are physically much stronger than even the most senior and experienced Space Marines. In appearance, Dreadknights differ greatly from normal Dreadnoughts. They are larger, bulkier and appear like a humanoid shaped exoskeleton.
The Nemesis Dreadknight was created by the Order of the Grey Knights as the ultimate weapon in the fight against Chaos, especially against the terrible threat of the Great Demons. A Dreadknight is larger, stronger and more heavily armoured than even a Space Marine in Terminator armour. The epitome of technology at the heart of the Nemesis Dreadknight is an adamantium alloy exoskeleton whose limbs are brought to life by a compact but powerful plasma reactor.
Layered on top are a series of composite ceramic plates and armoured control linkages. The pilot controls his terror knight using synaptic implants in much the same way that Tau fire warriors control their combat suits. This system gives the pilot complete control over the machine's limbs and weapons systems. It is not known whether the neural impulse technology that powers this impressive weapon system is a fragment of humanity's lost heritage from the Dark Ages of technology, or whether its origins lie in reclaimed Xenos technology.
A Nemesis Dreadknight is optimised for close combat and is usually armed with one or two Nemesis Force Weapons for close combat, such as one or two Nemesis Doomfists, a Nemesis Greatsword or a Nemesis Daemonhammer, each of which can focus and amplify the innate psychic abilities of the Dreadknight's Grey Knight pilot.
Dread Knights are also often equipped with ranged weapons such as a Heavy Incinerator, a Gatling Psilencer or a Heavy Psycanon. Many Dread Knights also use built-in personal teleport technology to unleash near-instant attacks against a demonic foe that rarely knows fear.
