Fell Bats

With a body as long as a grown man, fell bats are a fearsome sight. They are darker than midnight and dead silent even when in flight. In fact, the only sound a fur bat makes when hunting is a horrid slurp as it sinks its distended mouth into living flesh. In truth, a fur bat bears as much resemblance to an ordinary bat as a mad lion bears to a domestic cat. Those who have met and lived with them tell of how they hunt with unerring accuracy, swoop down to knock knights from their saddles, or take down lone fighters unprepared.

Vampires see fell bats much like a Breton lord sees his prized hunting falcons. Precious candy is offered to Fell Bats from the ramparts of the Vampire Keep, but a greater sacrifice must be made to tame an entire herd. A fresh victim, gutted and screaming, or a terrified messenger running into the night with his eyes gouged out is more to their liking. As soon as they smell blood, they will descend upon the enemy battle line with bloodthirsty intent.

They make excellent scouts and flanking troops. As their thirst for blood drives them to ever greater acts of violence, the Fell Bats rush into battle in a frenzy of bloodshed, only stopping when they are completely dead - or their victim, which is far more often the case.
