Dankhold Troggoth
Dankhold Troggoths are solitary, even by the standards of their antisocial species. They tend to avoid the company of most other living Creatures and trudge lower and lower into the deepest tunnels until they find a nice, quiet dugout where they can nap undisturbed. Once a Dankhold Troggoth settles down for a nap, it can be decades—even centuries—before it snorts back to being awake. Over time, these strange beasts shrink or grow to fit the location of their chosen lair. As a result, some troggoths squeeze into absurdly cramped burrows and drift away, only to wake up at half their original height and weight. On the other hand, a Dankhold Troggoth falling asleep in an echoing cave may be many times larger twenty years later than when it first fell asleep.
The reason for these strange transformations - at least according to the Moonclan shamans - is the diet of the Dankhold Troggoths. When awake, the lanky and stupid beasts will pluck almost anything that strays within reach and stuff it down their throats if they feel like it. However, their true favorite – and staple – are types of magic mushrooms that grow around realmstone deposits.
Even the guts of a Dankhold Troggoth couldn't handle digesting Reichsstein in its raw form - although that's not to say some of them haven't tried - but they will devour magic-infused fungi like Pyres, Blackenshades, and Irontongue Morels, as there would be no tomorrow. The accumulated primal magic should kill her stone dead after a few bites. Instead, it feeds the Dankhold Troggoths; This magical saturation not only boosts their metabolic and physical transmogrifications, but also makes Dankhold Troggoths remarkably resilient to hostile magics, which they often consume with a contented belch.
Mushrooms and puffballs take root in the flesh of troggoths as they sleep, and they drag crude clubs of stone and petrified wood back and forth like beloved companions. This, coupled with the stench of deep caves that clings to them and the forests of small stalagmites that form on their shoulders and heads, make Dankhold Troggoths a comforting presence to other subterranean dwellers. When the beasts emerge from the depths to do battle amidst the Gloomspite hordes, it's as if the spirit of the Deep 'n' have joined the battlefield thanks to the Grots. Moonclan grots in particular huddle close to their "big comrades," taking confidence in their presence while letting the troggoths soak up most of the enemy fire.
If Dankhold Troggoths are a comfort on the battlefield to their allies, they are dreaded Figures to their enemies. Nearly as tall as gargants, the largest of them possess a slow and unrelenting force that drives them to smash down fortress gates and crush the mightiest warriors to bloody paste. Varying between moronic curiosity and sudden, terrifying ferocity, the Dankhold Troggoths steadily trudge through enemy lines, wreaking bloody havoc along the way. Blades thrust into their thick skin are likely to be trapped as troggoths' wounds are closed with wet slurps while arrows and bolts feather their flesh to no effect. Even a severed limb can do no more than slow the beasts.
Truly, an enemy's only hope of bringing down a Dankhold Troggoth is to punish them beyond their regenerative abilities. But even if they bring down the massive beast, the enemy's triumph will be short-lived. After all, every bolt of lightning and magical blast directed at a Dankhold Troggoth leaves another grot unscathed as he rushes into battle, blades flashing and fangs bared for assassination.
The giant troggoths are tough units that have regeneration and magic defenses.
