The Pirates

The pirates are a colorful mix of weathered, battle-hardened, fearless sea dogs. They brave wind and waves, drink rum, curse up a storm, and come from all corners of the seas and all walks of life. Each one has turned their back on established society for a different reason, carving out a place in the world with gunpowder and sword. Freedom is their highest value, and they defend it fiercely against any threat. More than a few have a habit of spicing up every opportunity with a hearty Arrr.

The first pirates likely arrived on Leonera even before the Empire, though they kept a low profile. When all you have are three barely seaworthy boats and a handful of rusty pistols against an imperial fleet, caution is wise. But over time, their fleet grew larger and stronger until one day, the pirates were powerful enough to drive the weakened Empire out of the city. Since then, they’ve become one of the most powerful factions on the island.

Although the pirates have tried time and again to establish an organized government, their love of gold, rum, and brawling regularly undermines such efforts. Their arsenal is as eclectic as their crew: from throwing knives to hand mortars, they carry anything that’s reliable and easy to maintain. Whatever weapon they have on hand, the pirates know how to use it with skill.

The pirates are not defined by any particular strengths or weaknesses, but rather by their versatility. Whether in melee or ranged combat, they can dish out damage and even take a few hits without crumpling to the ground like a soft-hearted ballplayer. On the battlefield, they are universally adaptable and always have the right tool or weapon for the situation—even if it’s just a bare fist.

A skilled captain must, however, make good use of the pirates’ flexibility to counter the specialized strengths of other factions. While they may not be a highly specialized force, their adaptability makes them an unpredictable and formidable opponent on Leonera.
