The Wirbelwind (Whirlwind) was one of several anti-aircraft vehicles built on the reliable and ubiquitous Pz IV chassis. It featured a quad-barreled Flakvierling 38 mounted on an open-topped turret, designed to provide rapid and flexible anti-aircraft capabilities.

Approximately 100 Wirbelwinds were produced in the latter half of 1944, meeting the German need for a self-propelled, multi-barrel flak gun capable of engaging targets within 2,000 meters. The distinctive shape of its turret earned it the nickname "Keksdose" (biscuit tin) among its crews.

In combat, the Wirbelwind's 2cm guns could unleash a devastating 800 rounds per minute. Although these guns were relatively ineffective against high-speed aircraft, they were highly effective against ground targets, including infantry, soft-skinned vehicles, and lightly armored vehicles. The Wirbelwind's rapid-fire capability made it a formidable asset, providing both anti-aircraft defense and ground support to German forces during the later stages of World War II.
