The Battle of Gettysburg, fought in the first three days of July 1863, proved to be the tide of the Confederacy and the turning point of the American Civil War. The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia under General Lee, fresh from defeating the Union at Chancellorsville, attacked the Army of the Potomac under Union General Meade in the deadliest battle of the entire conflict in the crossroads city of Gettysburg. The battle ended after the near-suicidal attack known as Pickett's attack, which caused the battered rebel army to withdraw from the field. Lee's invasion of the north was halted.
