Chipping Medium
Chipping Medium, also known as chipping fluid, is a specialized product used in scale modeling and miniature painting to create realistic weathering effects. Whether applied with a brush or airbrush, it allows modelers to simulate the wear and tear that real-life objects experience, such as chipped paint on model aircraft, tanks, cars, or dioramas. The medium works by altering the adhesion properties of the paint layers, making it easier to chip or remove the topcoat and reveal the underlying base coat, achieving highly convincing effects.
Instructions for Use:
Apply Base Coat:
- Start by applying a base coat to the model's surface. This represents the underlying material or color.
Apply Chipping Medium:
- Once the base coat is dry, apply the chipping medium over it. This layer acts as a barrier, allowing the topcoat to be removed or chipped later.
Apply Topcoat:
- After the chipping medium has dried, apply a topcoat in your desired color or shade. This will be the outer paint layer.
Create Chipping Effect:
Achieving Rust and Weathering Effects:
- Apply the chipping medium to areas where rust or wear is expected.
- After the chipping medium dries, apply a rust-colored topcoat.
- Gently use a damp brush or sponge to remove the topcoat, revealing rusted areas and simulating rust and weathering.
Advanced Techniques for More Control:
- Use fine-grit sandpaper or abrasive pads for controlled chipping effects.
- Apply Masking Tape to create defined edges for chipped areas.
- Experiment with different water-to-chipping medium ratios to vary the adhesion and control the amount of chipping.
Creating Natural Worn Paint Effects:
- Apply chipping medium to areas prone to wear, such as edges or high-traffic zones.
- After the topcoat dries, gently remove portions of the topcoat with a damp brush or cloth to create a naturally worn effect.
Warnings:
- Avoid letting the chipping medium dry for too long before applying the topcoat, as this may reduce its effectiveness.
- The more chipping medium you apply, the greater the wear effect. Insufficient application may not produce the desired chipping.
- Do not dilute the chipping medium, as this could reduce its performance.
