The Chaos Space Marines (also known as Traitor Marines, Chaos Marines, Heretic Astartes or Traitor Legionnaires) are among the most popular and powerful servants of the forces of Chaos.

Ten thousand years ago, Horus, War Master of the Empire and most trusted "son" of the Emperor, fell victim to Chaos due to a conspiracy of the Word Bearers. In addition to the Legion of Space Marines under his direct command, the Sons of Horus, eight of his brother Primarchs and their Legions joined him in the Horus Heresy against the Emperor.

Only when Horus was slain in the ultimate conflict of heresy, the Battle of Terra, was the rebellion broken and the defeated traitor legions chased into the Eye of Terror, which remains both their prison and their sanctuary to this day. The Chaos Space Marines have not forgotten their defeat in the Heresy and have spent the last ten thousand years fighting the Long War against the Empire.

Technically, the Legions of the Chaos Space Marines are the only surviving legions of Space Marines, as the Loyalist Legions were converted into independent orders after the Heresy. Although the Legion remains alive as an identifying concept for the Chaos Marines, in reality almost all of the Chaos Legions have been scattered over time into separate warbands following rival Chaos Champions. It is said that only the Black Legion, Death Guard and Word Bearers have retained their cohesion as a Legion.[5] Occasionally, a highly favoured Chaos Champion such as Abaddon is able to temporarily reunite these traitor legions against the Empire.

Over the millennia, the energies that permeate the Eye of Terror have exerted their transformative effects on both the living flesh and the inanimate weapons and armour of the Chaos Space Marines. In terms of weapons and Equipment, the Chaos Legions retain much of their Legiones Astartes heritage. The bolter remains the main weapon, even if it has been remodelled into a fusion of biological and inorganic Parts, or remodelled into strange and baroque shapes by the whims of Chaos or the user himself. Although Power Armor is often unrecognisable as Astartes issue, the suits continue to function the same and include standard autosensory technology, communicators, and respirators. The armour has been recoloured and decorated to show allegiance to the Legion's Patron of Chaos.
