Brotherhood Terminator Squad
"... and they are the judgment of the righteous upon the unclean. They bring the wrath of the God-Emperor against those creatures who cannot be understood by the faithful ..."
- Inquisitor Octus Enoch
A Grey Knights Paladin is an elite warrior without equal in the ranks of the Grey Knights Space Marine Order. To prove himself worthy of a place among this cadre of the Order's elite, a prospective aspirant must complete eight quests to prove his character and cause, each more difficult than the last. Only when this has been done has the aspirant earned his advancement to the rank of Paladin.
Once his quests are complete, the new Paladin will leave his former brotherhood and take his place in the sacred Hall of Champions in the Citadel of Titan. The Paladin will then be beholden not only to his Order, but also to one of the Grand Masters of the Grey Knights, for whom he will act as bodyguard, champion and advisor.
On the battlefield, a Paladin is always where the fighting is thickest and the dangers greatest.
If a Grey Knight wants to prove that he is worthy of a place among the Paladins of the Order, bravery and skill are not enough - he must complete eight quests to prove his character and his cause. First, the aspirant must spend a day and a night in the haunted caves beneath Mount Anarch on Titan without losing his sanity or sense of purpose. Should he persevere, he must summon his will against the restless evil of the terrible tome Abbiallach, who lies chained in the Sanctum Sanctorum of the Order's fortress monastery.
Having had his mental strength thus tested, the aspirant is then called upon to prove his strength of arms. He will make a pilgrimage to Lansel's tomb on the doomed moon of Tethys without wearing armour that would protect him from the warp-born beasts trapped there.
He must track down each of the four types of Daemon Heralds in the service of the Chaos Gods and deal them a death blow, returning with a horn or tooth from each to prove his victory.
There are four more quests, each more arduous than the last, the last being the most difficult of all. The contestant will hunt down and banish one of the six hundred and sixty-six most powerful demons ever to manifest in the mortal realm, armed only with his Nemesis Force Sword and the true name of the beast taken from the pages of the Iron Grimoire. Only when this has been done has the aspirant earned his advancement to the rank of Paladin.
Given the dangerous nature of these quests, it is no wonder that only the boldest Grey Knights become Paladins. Yet it is almost unheard of for an aspirant to the rank to abandon his quests, as it would mean grave dishonour. While the cost of pursuing the Paladin's quests is high, they ensure that nowhere in the Empire is such a noble collection of warriors to be found as in Titan's Hall of Champions.
