Australian Jungle Division Infantry Section

In the early months of 1943, the Australian Army underwent a significant reorganization, adapting to the demands of jungle warfare in the Pacific theater. The result was the creation of Jungle Divisions, a lighter and more specialized version of the standard British Army organization. These divisions were designed to excel in the challenging jungle Terrain, where conventional warfare tactics often proved ineffective.

One notable aspect of these Jungle Divisions was the substantial increase in short-ranged firepower. The number of submachine guns (SMGs) in these divisions soared, with 981 SMGs now at their disposal, compared to the previous 400. This enhanced firepower was vital for close-quarters combat and navigating the dense jungle environment.

The absence of conventional roads or open Terrain in jungle warfare meant that many support, transport, and anti-aircraft units were no longer necessary. As a result, personnel from these units were reassigned to the rifle platoons, bolstering their manpower and combat capabilities.

Furthermore, recognizing the need to navigate the challenging landscape and deal with Japanese booby traps, the number of field engineers was doubled. Their expanded presence was essential for crossing the numerous rivers that crisscrossed the jungle Terrain and for ensuring the safety of Australian troops as they faced the unique challenges posed by the Pacific jungle.
